This past Wednesday, President Obama announced that he felt it was time to retaliate against Russia for interfering in the 2016 election. This announcement comes with Obama only having less than a month left in office, and a President-Elect who is looking to have a better relationship with Vladimir Putin and Russia.
President Obama issued a statement today ordering two Russian Intelligence compounds in the United States to be shut down immediately, and that the thirty-five Russian Diplomats in D.C. and San Fransisco to leave the US within 72 hours. The sanctions effect several different Russian intelligence agencies as well as their employees, however, Obama did not include Russian President Vladimir Putin despite his belief that Putin knew about the hacking.
Russia has yet to release a statement on Obama’s latest orders.
