U.S. History no longer a required course for history majors at George Washington University

In an effort to give students more “flexibility”, George Washington University recently made changes to the degree plan for history majors, but a few key courses seem to be missing.

The department eliminated requirements in U.S., North American and European history, as well as the foreign language requirement making it possible for students majoring in history at GWU to earn a degree in history without taking a single survey course on American history. While there is a requirement for an introductory course for which American history, World History and European civilization are options, that course an be fulfilled with a high score on Advanced Placement World History, U.S. History, or European History.

“A democratic republic cannot thrive without well-informed citizens and leaders. Elite colleges and universities in particular let the nation down when the examples they set devalue the study of United States history,” American Council of Trustees and Alumni President Dr. Michael Poliakoff said in a statement.

A need to “recruit students” and “to better reflect a globalizing world” spurred this change according to faculty comments to the George Washington University student newspaper, The Hatchet.
